Meet Jack English, a 93-year-old legend who lives in a cabin isolated deep in the Ventana Wilderness.
While on a hunting trip he learned that an old homestead in the Ventana Wilderness was being put up for auction by the estate of a childless heiress. He put a bid on the property and won. On the land he built a small cabin using materials from the land and milling trees by hand. When his wife passed away, Jack effectively left "society" and moved to the cabin full time.

With three hours of light each day, brutal winter storms and freezing temperatures, Iceland is far from the ideal surf trip. However, this didn’t stop photographer Chris Burkard and filmmaker Ben Weiland from rounding up a crew of surfers to seek out unknown waves in the islands remote north… all during the worst storm to hit Iceland’s shores in 25 years.
Ace Kvale turned 60 last fall, and to celebrate, he planned a 60-day, off-trail backpacking trip around Utah's Canyon Country, leaving from his front door. He had a dozen friends join him for different sections of the trip, and one friend who joined him for the whole thing: his blue heeler, 10-year-old Genghis Khan aka 'Desert Dog'. Covering over 400 miles on their journey presented it's challenges but the special relationship between Ace and Genghis proved most powerful.
There are very few moments in life when you experience something profound; something that makes you rethink everything. Over the years, I’ve found those who opt for the outdoors as their passion to possess a genuine sense of calm and contentment. A recent encounter with a gentleman who left NYC and chose the wilderness for his home left me spellbound. Last year, I had the privilege of meeting a legend very few had the chance to encounter: ‘Billy Jo Moffat’. His story is truly remarkable, and for me to try and explain would never do it justice. I will, however, give a brief synopsis of that meeting.

The scent and simple beauty can’t help but bring a warm, contented smile and a real feeling of peace.
I’m truly thankful, as this wilderness and Dunton Hot Springs are my home for the next few days; a paradise lost, found and reborn by an incredible and passionate team, who make this unique place the perfect hideaway to disconnect and disappear, nestled in the heartland of the Colorado Rockies. This is where I meet Billy Jo, a gentleman in his 80s. I’m immediately struck by a magical glint in his eye, and his demeanour has a sincere aura of serenity. Before I know it, he’s masterfully telling stories of times gone by; I’m captivated, in particular about when he first came to Dunton in the ‘60s, and, when walking across the bridge to the cabins, he’d felt all his problems just melt away.
“I knew immediately that I wanted to spend the rest of my life here,” he says. With stories of Hells Angels, hippies and those who just stumbled in, it became the home to many weird and wonderful characters over the decades, and Billy saw it all. The city never stole his heart, and I guess he was a bit of a hippy at heart. Dunton Hot Springs is now the epitome of a boutique wilderness paradise, and one of my favourite places in the world to visit.
I feel honoured to have met a great man with a warm heart, and the wisdom and kindness of a true gentleman.
Sadly, shortly after I left Dunton, Billy passed away peacefully in the wilderness he called home; rest in peace, my friend.
